Charlottesville, Albemarle and Local Areas
It's known as the "country city" because people from the city feel like they're in the country...and people from the country feel like they've arrived in the city when they come to Charlottesville, right in the heart of central Virginia's mountain foothills. This is the hometown of Thomas Jefferson's University of Virginia (aka "wahoos, hoos, cavaliers, or cavs")....and also Jefferson's architecturally significant mountaintop home of Monticello (if you need to be refreshed about Monticello's appearance, look on your nickel). It's situated in the middle of Albemarle county and is surrounded by the counties of Fluvanna, Louisa, Nelson, Greene, Madison, Orange, and Augusta. The area is blessed with wonderful schools, a moderate climate, a terrific employment rate...all of which contribute to Charlottesville's selection each year on the "10 best places to live" lists.
